Dr. Joan Halifax, Ph.D.

Dr. Joan Halifax is an anthropologist, social activist, photographer and Buddhist teacher. She founded the Ojai Foundation, The Upaya Zen Center, the Project on Being with Dying, and the Upaya Prison Project. She was on the faculty to Columbia University, the New School for Social Research, and Naropa University. She was an Honorary Research Fellow at Harvard University, received a National Science Foundation Fellowship, and is the author of numerous books, including “Compassionate Care of the Dying: An Integral Approach.” She is Abbot of Upaya Zen Center, and teaches world wide on the subject of death and dying. She is also Verona Fonté’s sister.

Grattan Woodson, M.D., F.A.C.P.

Dr. Woodson obtained his M.D. at the Medical College of Georgia in 1980 and completed a categorical internal medicine residency training at The Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, N.Y., an affiliate of Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York, N.Y. In 1983, Dr. Woodson joined the full-time faculty of Emory University School of Medicine where he began his work in osteoporosis. In 1986 he left Emory to form the Osteoporosis Center of Atlanta, where he focused his efforts on the diagnosis and treatment of patients with osteoporosis, osteoporosis research, and physician education. He is the also the author of a number of articles on the diagnosis and treatment of this disease. He remains active in physician education and maintains his relationship with Emory University where he serves as a Clinical Instructor of Medicine.

Edward B. (Ted) Mohns, M.D.

Dr. Mohns of Del Mar, CA, provides consulting services to biotechnology and technology companies, and has consulted to a venture capital group in addition to his own angel investment activities. Trained in Internal Medicine at Stanford and in Psychiatry at UCSD, Dr. Mohns maintains a part-time clinical practice, is Associate Clinical Professor, UCSD School of Medicine, is involved in the therapeutic applications of low-energy laser, and has long been active in medical ethics. He also serves on the board of the Verified Voting Foundation as well as pursuing a variety of other civic interests. Dr. Mohns first became alerted to avian flu in 2004, and since then has been working intently on this issue at multiple levels.

Joshua D. Lichterman, Ph.D.

Dr. Licterman is the owner and President of the Emergency Management Group Inc. of Grass Valley, CA. He has been a Business Continuity Planner for more than 27 years and has worked with a variety of clients in both the public and private sectors. He has performed risk assessments and vulnerability analyses, developed business continuity plans, and developed and delivered related training and exercise programs. He taught at the California Specialized Training Institute and the UC Berkeley Extension Certificate Program in Emergency Management. His clients have included Neutrogena Corp., Chevron, Berkeley Unified School District, City of Berkeley, California Department of Rehabilitation, and Genentech Corp.

Kathleen Johnson, M.S., R.D.

Ms. Johnson received degrees in nutrition from the University of Arizona. She has been working as a nutritionist for over 25 years, beginning in public health nutrition and nutrition education and moving toward her interest in preventive nutrition and the education of health professionals and the public. She worked 12 years at Canyon Ranch Health Resort and 3 years as the nutritionist with Dr. Andrew Weil’s Program in Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona. She is now a consulting nutritionist with National University and Canyon Ranch.
